Any police station: complete the form, full set of fingerprints taken, pay the fee (±R150). The prints go to the Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria; the certificate returns via the station or courier. Prints taken at a local police station or accredited agency abroad, apostilled where required, couriered to the CRC with the application and fee — standard for SA expats needing PCCs for foreign immigration. Allow 6–12 weeks; start it the day the visa checklist arrives.
What shows — and what shouldn’t
Convictions and their sentences show. What SHOULDN’T show but sometimes does: withdrawn cases lingering as unresolved entries, admission-of-guilt fines you forgot, matters where you were acquitted, and other people’s records mismatched to your prints (rare but real). Never assume — pull your own PCC before the visa office does.
Fixing wrong or old entries
Withdrawn/acquitted matters still showing: rectification demand to the CRC with the court outcome — SAPS must correct its records. Old qualifying convictions: expungement after 10 years through DG Justice. Admission-of-guilt surprises: set-aside review where the process was defective. Each has its own paper trail; each is routine legal work with deadlines that matter when an immigration date looms.
For employers and applicants
Employers may verify records with consent (AFIS checks via accredited providers are faster than PCCs for screening). Applicants: honesty plus context beats discovery — but the smarter sequence is cleaning the record BEFORE the application cycle. A rectified or expunged record lawfully answers ‘no criminal record’.
